While the idea for a „Blade Runner“ sequel was floating around in 1982 and would eventually become Blade Runner: The Final Cut, I was put to rest about it for a long time by the thought that one couldn’t do a sequel to such a well liked and critically acclaimed movie. This wasn’t necessarily the case, however; in its final form, „Blade Runner 2049“ is actually a what-if story. That is, what if director Denis Villeneuve &’s Ridley Scott hadn’t taken off from „Blade Runner’s’“ stunning visuals to go over to the uncharted island of Batalla del Diablo in Mexico, or what if he hadn’t been able to find an actor who could play Roy Batty, the original Blade Runner? As it turns out, he did both of these things, and the end result, although not at first, has proven itself to be the most striking and ambitious installment of the series to date. Scott, the original director, justifiably calls this an *‘ *altered-yet-distinct and unpredictable experience.‘ * ‚In a film that does not strive to be original but to tell a familiar yet altered and unpredictable story, it would be impossible to express the enormous satisfaction that we obtained through the editing process; the end result is both respectful to the audience and to the original vision of the script, while maintaining a great deal of freedom in the editing of the plot.‘ * ‚The approach of the film’s expression is similar to that of the first film, but the overall length and principal characters are placed in a more complicated and less predictable story.‘ * ‚I have no doubt that this is the best and most complete expression of the project. ‚, he adds. A brief trailer was released on the day of the film’s premiere, with (you guessed it) a few more shots at promoting the film, but that’s all you’ll see until Friday’s release date.
